Lake Superior State University, also known as Lake Superior State, Lake State or simply LSSU, is a small public university in Sault Ste. Marie, which is the county seat of Chippewa County, situated in the US state of Michigan, having a population approximated at a number of more than 16 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 2nd most populous city in the Upper Peninsula.
LSSU was officially established in 1946, to address the needs of returning World War II veterans, and to educate the people of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. The site where the university's campus stands today served as Fort Brady from 1894 to 1944, being listed as ''New Fort Brady'' on the National Register of Historic Places. The institution adopted its current name in 1987, when it was granted university status.
Lake State is known for its academic programs in areas such as engineering, fisheries and wildlife management, criminal justice, chemistry and the environmental sciences, among others, and it is also known for the fact that offers the only accredited undergraduate degree program in environmental health, in the state. The university offers primarily bachelor's and associate's degrees, but also grants a master of arts in curriculum and instruction and many certificates.
Lake Superior State's athletic teams are known as the Lakers, or the Soo Lakers, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, the university's most prominent sport being men's ice hockey, the school's only NCAA Division I program, in which the Lakers have appeared in the NCAA Division I ice hockey tournament 10 times, and have won 3 national championships ('88, '92 and '94) at that level.
The distinctive colors of the Lakers are royal blue and gold.
Among Lake Superior State University's noteworthy alumni, there are: Claude Denker - senior vice president of Penske Corporation, and sports personalities Brian Rolston (New Jersey Devils), Doug Weight (New York Islanders), and Bates Battaglia (Toronto Maple Leafs/Toronto Marlies).
